Reflecting as the summer winds down
This morning I am sitting on the back deck enjoying the cool breeze and the crowing of my rooster, Salacia. He takes his job seriously and encourages the sun to rise.
In my daily routines, I am asking myself to be more efficient and yet at the same time, free and open with my energy. As I understand what that requires (on a daily level), it reminds me to take breaks and know with clarity and confidence that the decisions I am making are right for me. I include pauses to hear my breath, which allows the distractions to be fewer. It is also helpful for me to listen to the crickets singing and the birds chirping, forming their beautiful choir.
Last week a calf was born on the neighbouring farm that shares my west tree line. The Highland Scottish Cattle are one of my many joys of living here. The herd is a strong, grounded and calm group, reminding me of nature's beauty and life-giving force.
This summer, I have had the luxury of tasting new food dishes spiced with herbs. Some of the herbs were from my garden, helping to spark a renewal to eat cleaner and try new recipes.
The farmers around me are busy harvesting, cultivating and planting winter cover crops. I often wonder how they manage their lives while knowing Mother Nature is in charge and has her own timeline. I am grateful and inspired by the increased awareness and knowledge of native pollinator plants as my family and friends share native cultivars and information with me.
Change is in the air as Fall approaches. I am taking note of the successful plantings this year and where I might alter the gardens next year. Overall, the plants have thrived and I have enjoyed their company this season. Preserving and harvesting is part of my days now. Soon I will be preparing the Log Studio with some plant hangers around the windows. There are many plants that I would like to encourage to grow in the winter, so they can be part of the outdoor decorations next summer.
As you prepare your nest for winter, invite Nature to be with you and create a "living space" of your own. Nature is waiting to be a guest in your home and your life.
-Take good care-
Annette
