December- Moss

An unexpected friend showing its colours through the snow.

Moss was one of the first plants to emerge from the ocean and survive on land....400 million years ago, resulting in over 10,000 species worldwide. This small green terrestrial plant can be found across Canada. Usually less than 10 cm tall, it is a velvet dense mat-like formation that attaches itself to rocks, trees, fallen logs and soil.

We may not think about the luxurious carpet of moss in Winter, but at Rooted it is very abundant in the bush and along the driveway and field. The extraordinarily wet year has allowed it to be plentiful and grow in unusual locations. With the lack of snow, it is vibrant in beautiful shades of green.

It usually grows in shade or semi-shade where there is plenty of moisture and sandy, acidic soil.

It has an important role in the ecosystem as it soaks up moisture, keeping conditions humid, allowing neighbouring plants to thrive and also help to control soil erosion.

Spiritually, moss represents growth, renewal, abundance and positivity. Its soothing qualities promote peace, stability and physical and emotional well being.

Medicinally it is antimicrobial and is used in the treatment of acne, hemorrhoids, and skin diseases.

Some varieties are used for soil conditioners, industrial chemical absorbents, fuel, as a medium for growing mushrooms and decoratively in the floral industry.

At The Log Barn Studio we like to use it in fresh and dried creations.
