Hydrangeas are beautiful spring/summer flower that can bloom in colours from white and green, to pink, blue, purple or burgundy.

The root word, originates from the latin word water. This is key to these perennial flowers as they require abundant watering.

Hydrangeas are a hardy flower, and come in many varieties. With over 70 species, some common varieties include Climbing hydrangea, Lacecap and Mountain hydrangea.

In the Rooted garden we have Limelight, Incrediball- large white flowered blossoms, Annabelle, Grandiflora and Lacecap varities.

These blooms can be air dried. This means you can stand them upright in a vase without any water!

For them to dry well, harvesting later in the season is important when the petals feel paper like. The drying period takes about two weeks in a dark and dry location, with no humidity. The darkness helps to preserve their colour.

Hydrangeas are a great flower for making fresh and dried floral designs and wreaths. Uniquely they can be painted to create different colour combinations and originality.

Our favourite way to use fresh Hydrangeas is in wedding and funeral creations. When dried, we like to include them in decorative wreaths.
